India's startup ecosystem continues to grow at a rapid pace. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognised over 2,000 new startups in July 2026 alone, with cumulative recognised startups now crossing the 1.5 lakh mark since the Startup India initiative launched in 2016.

  • Section 80-IAC Tax Holiday: 3 years of 100% income tax exemption out of first 10 years of incorporation
  • Angel Tax Exemption (Section 56(2)(viib)): Investments from recognised investors not treated as income
  • No capital gains tax on investments from DPIIT-recognised funds/AIF Category-I
  • Self-certification under 9 Labour Laws (no inspections for 3 years)
  • Self-certification under 3 Environmental Laws
  • Fast-track patent examination at 80% reduced fee
  • Fast-track trademark registration

How to Get DPIIT Recognition

  • Register on Startup India portal: startupindia.gov.in
  • Create an account with company PAN and GST details
  • Fill the application form with business description, pitch deck, and innovation details
  • Submit self-certification of eligibility (turnover, age, entity type)
  • DPIIT reviews and grants recognition (typically 2-3 working days for complete applications)
  • Download DPIIT Recognition Certificate from the portal

Eligibility Criteria

Entity Type: Private Limited Company, LLP, or Registered Partnership Firm

Incorporation: Within the last 10 years from date of incorporation

Turnover: Annual turnover should not have exceeded ₹100 crore in any previous year

Innovation: Working towards innovation, development, or improvement of products, processes, or services

Exclusions:

  • Formed by splitting or reconstructing an existing business
  • Joint venture with an existing company
  • Franchise or distribution/sales arrangements

Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS)

₹945 crore scheme to provide financial support to startups:

  • Proof of Concept: Up to ₹20 lakh as grant
  • Prototype Development: Up to ₹20 lakh as grant
  • Product Trials/Market Entry: Up to ₹50 lakh as convertible debentures/debt
  • Fund disbursed through selected incubators — check list at seedfund.startupindia.gov.in
