FSSAI India
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced an extension in the renewal deadline for food business licenses. This decision has been taken in response to representations from food business operators (FBOs) across the country who faced challenges due to portal technical issues and documentation requirements.
Types of FSSAI Licenses
Basic FSSAI Registration:
State FSSAI License:
Central FSSAI License:
- ▸For annual turnover up to ₹12 lakh or petty food businesses
- ▸Valid for 1-5 years (renewable)
- ▸Fee: ₹100 per year
- ▸For businesses with turnover ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore
- ▸For mid-sized manufacturers, storage operators, transport, retailers
- ▸Fee varies by state: ₹2,000–₹5,000 per year
- ▸For businesses with turnover above ₹20 crore
- ▸Importers, exporters, large manufacturers, e-commerce food businesses
- ▸Fee: ₹7,500 per year
Renewal Process Online (FoSCoS Portal)
- ▸Visit FoSCoS portal: foscos.fssai.gov.in
- ▸Log in with your existing license credentials
- ▸Click "Apply for Renewal" from the dashboard
- ▸Update business details, products list, and documents
- ▸Pay renewal fee online via net banking/cards
- ▸Download renewed license once approved (usually 30-60 days)
Documents Required for Renewal
- ▸Current FSSAI license copy
- ▸Identity and address proof of proprietor/partners/directors
- ▸List of food products manufactured/handled
- ▸Latest NOC from municipality or local body
- ▸Latest water test report from accredited lab (for manufacturers)
- ▸Form-D (Declaration) for food safety management practices
- ▸Blueprint/layout of the premises with dimensions
Penalty for Operating Without Valid License
- ▸Without registration/license: Imprisonment up to 6 months and/or fine up to ₹5 lakh
- ▸Expired license (operating after expiry): Fine up to ₹2 lakh
- ▸Manufacturing unsafe food: Imprisonment up to 2 years and fine up to ₹5 lakh
- ▸FSSAI enforcement teams conduct regular surprise inspections in all states
New Compliance Requirements
FSSAI has introduced new requirements for food businesses:
- ▸Food Safety Management System (FSMS) Plan mandatory for all licensed entities
- ▸Hygiene and Sanitation (H&S) inspection mandatory before license grant/renewal
- ▸Food recall procedure must be documented and practiced
- ▸All food handlers must complete FOSTAC (Food Safety Training & Certification) program
