Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — Types, Uses & How to Get

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic equivalent of a physical signature or stamp. DSC is used to sign documents digitally in a legally binding manner under the Information Technology Act 2000. For business compliance in India — MCA filings, GST, income tax, customs, and e-tendering — DSC is mandatory.

Types of DSC in India

Class 3 DSC (Most Common for Business):

DGFT DSC:

Document Signer Certificate:

  • Identity verified by a Certifying Authority (CA)
  • Used for: MCA company filing, GST, income tax (CA, companies), e-tendering, DGFT
  • Validity: 1 or 2 years
  • Cost: ₹800–₹2,000 per year
  • Specific to DGFT portal for import-export licence
  • Based on IEC number
  • For bulk signing of invoices, certificates, reports
  • Used by companies issuing large volumes of signed documents

When is DSC Mandatory?

  • MCA Company Registration: DSC of all proposed directors (SPICe+ form)
  • MCA Annual Filing: Directors must sign AOC-4 and MGT-7 with DSC
  • GST: Certain categories of taxpayers must use DSC (companies, LLPs) for GST registration and returns
  • Income Tax: Companies and firms must use DSC for ITR filing; audit report (3CA/3CB) must be signed with CA's DSC
  • E-Tendering: Government portals (GeM, CPPP, eProcure) require DSC
  • MCA DIR-3 KYC: Director KYC e-form requires DSC
  • DGFT: IEC registration and modification

How to Apply for DSC

Step 1: Choose a licensed Certifying Authority:

Step 2: Submit documents online:

Step 3: Complete video verification with CA officer (video KYC is standard now)

Step 4: DSC issued digitally via email within 1–2 days. Download and install on USB token.

Storing and Using DSC

USB Token:

Using DSC:

  • DSC is stored on a hardware USB token (like a pen drive)
  • Private key never leaves the token — cannot be copied
  • Most tokens: Gemalto, ePass, WatchData
  • Plug USB token into computer
  • Install driver software
  • When signing a document/form, select your DSC from the token
  • Enter PIN (4–8 digit) set during DSC creation
  • Document signed digitally

DSC Renewal and Security

  • DSC validity: 1 year or 2 years
  • Renew before expiry to avoid gaps in filing capability
  • Never share DSC PIN with anyone
  • If token is lost: Report to Certifying Authority immediately for revocation
  • Multiple DSCs can exist on one token

Conclusion

DSC is a one-time investment (₹800–₹2,000/year) that enables fast, paperless compliance across MCA, GST, income tax, and government portals. Biswa Corporate Solutions provides Class 3 DSC procurement, DGFT DSC, and USB token renewal services — delivered digitally within 24 hours.
