Director KYC (DIR-3 KYC) — Who Must File, Process & Deadline

Every individual who holds a Director Identification Number (DIN) must file DIR-3 KYC annually with the MCA. This annual KYC (Know Your Customer) was introduced in 2018 to keep the DIN database clean and identify dummy or inactive directors.

Who Must File DIR-3 KYC?

Any person who:

Even if you are not currently a director — if your DIN was allotted before March 31 and status is Approved, you must file.

  • Was allotted a DIN on or before March 31 of the preceding financial year
  • Has DIN status as "Approved" (active)
  • Includes company directors, LLP designated partners, and professionals with DIN even if not currently serving

Types of DIR-3 KYC

Web-based KYC (for no changes): If no changes in mobile number or email — file DIR-3 KYC online on MCA portal using OTP verification. No DSC needed. Takes 5 minutes.
e-Form DIR-3 KYC (for first time or changes): If filing for the first time or if mobile/email has changed — file the full e-form with DSC. Attach Aadhaar, PAN, and address proof.

Due Date and Penalty

Due date: September 30 of every year

Penalty for late/non-filing:

  • DIN status immediately changed to "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC"
  • Fee to reactivate: ₹5,000 per KYC (after September 30)
  • Cannot sign any MCA form, consent to appointment as director, or take any corporate action with deactivated DIN

Documents Required

  • Mobile number (linked with PAN/Aadhaar — must be your personal number, not office number)
  • Email ID (personal)
  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card (for verification)
  • Address proof (if changed — electricity bill, bank statement)
  • DSC of DIN holder (for e-form)
  • Photograph

How to File DIR-3 KYC on MCA Portal

  • Login to mca.gov.in with your MCA user credentials
  • Go to "MCA Services" → "e-Filing" → "DIR-3 KYC"
  • Select web-based or e-form based on your requirement
  • Enter DIN, name, mobile, email
  • Verify OTP sent to registered mobile and email
  • For web KYC: Submit → Done
  • For e-form: Download, fill details, attach documents, affix DSC, upload

Conclusion

DIR-3 KYC takes 10–15 minutes and prevents your DIN from being deactivated. Many directors miss this due to lack of awareness and pay ₹5,000 penalty. Biswa Corporate Solutions sends annual reminders to all clients with DIN and files DIR-3 KYC on their behalf.
